Restoration of terracotta and frescoes and of the Ark of S. Pietro Martire (Martyr)

Pigello Portinari, who managed the Medici Banco (Bank) in Milan, built the chapel in an elegant Renaissance style for the custody of the relics of the head of S. Pietro Martire, and was buried there in 1468. Vincenzo Foppa realized the frescoes showing the killing and the miracles of the Saint, the Annunciation and the Assumption of the Virgin. In the XVIII century, the XIV century ark containing the body of the Saint, made by Giovanni di Balduccio from Pisa, was transferred into the chapel. Restoration works involved the exterior surfaces with the consolidation of  the Angera parts, and the recovery of the frescoes graffiti. Inside, the frescoes and terracotta of the decorative bands and of the angelic triumph were cleaned and integrated. A delicate and careful cleaning restored the brightness of Carrara marble of the ark sculptures.
