Restoration of Church of St. Maria degli Angeli’s façade and statues.

Designed by Tuscan architect Domenico Giunti, architect of the Spanish governor Don Ferrante I Gonzaga, the construction of the church started on February 21st, 1552, with the participation of the best artists of the time. Inspired by the Manneristic trend, the façade was completed only towards the end of the seventeenth century, according to Giunti’s original design. The conservative restoration of the façade aimed at recovering and preserving the decorative plaster finished in 1920 that emerged during the stratigraphic evaluations and throughout the recovery interventions. The aesthetics restoration of the façade, made of transparent glazes on the restored plaster , was decided under the supervision of Arch. Libero Corrieri on the basis of  a printing of the early nineteenth century. The decorative pieces and the statue sandstone strain, of particular value and interest, were restored following the procedures of headstone restoration. A particular attention was given to the structural consolidation of the façade’s ledge where the restored statues of the two angels were placed again, after they had fallen to pieces on the church’s roof in 2008.
