Conservative renovation of the external façades on Via San Damiano and Via Mozart

At the beginning of the Modern Era, the ancient medieval settlements which constituted the heart of the town, started to disappear to make space to new architectural styles which were going to draw the urban horizon. Serbelloni Palace, monumental neoclassic building, is one of the most important examples of the  transition period represented by the 18th century, where the triumphal architecture became part of  a very cosy but still rural urban fabric.
The actual building rises on the area where “Villa Trotti”, a 17th century construction (probably former medieval buildings), was located, extending its territory from Navigli waterways to the Spanish  town walls.
The renovation works, besides preserving the frames, aimed at highlighting the 17th century origins of the façades on Via San Damiano and via Mozart  which Architect Cantoni  perceptively maintained in the new building wanted by Serbelloni family.
Works interested the cleaning, the restoration and consolidation of the stone furnishings of the cotto façades.
The diagnostic evaluations, after a series of stratigraphic tests carried out with the cooperation of Laboratorio Palladio, effectively revealed this historic and architectural information: lime plaster traces dating back to XVI and XVII century were found on a great part of  the stone furnishings that were probably destroyed at the end of  XIX  century.
The original façades were therefore plastered with a thin pigment lime coat.
For this  reason, some building details like windows,  architraves and  cornices,  resurfaced after deep cleaning and consolidation, have to be analyzed as witnesses of a disappeared history.
