Meda family built the palace in the XVII century on the rural area between Piermarini gardens and via Cavalchino (Via Manin) that today is part of Milan Public Garden.
Cavalchino family owned it until 1730 when it was tranferred to Casati family, which sold it to Dugnani in 1753.
In 1835, after Teresa Dugnani Viani’s death, the property was inherited by Giovanni Vimercati. Few years later, in 1846, the municipality bought house and grounds with the purpose of enlarging the gardens.
The building façades now overlook Via Manin, where an octagonal plan turret with its lantern stands up, and the wide park: this second wing shows porticos and loggias, with a backward central body and two protruding lateral ones.
The palace hosted elite parties and intellectual gatherings in its magnificent halls, among which we can mention the splendid grand ballroom with Tiepolo frescoes.
From private dwelling, during the 70’s and the 80’s it became seat of Female High School “Alessandro Manzon” and of some Milan district offices.
Presently the palace is undergoing restoration and preservation works to become Milan “XIX century Museum”.
