The construction of The Senate Palace began in 1608 during the Counter-Reformation era: it was erected as “Swiss College”, i.e. a Swiss seminary college for the education of Swiss priesthood.
In 1886 the Palace was destined to host the State Archives and, from then on, major renovation works were carried out in view of the new conditions of use.
During the II World War the Palace was seriously damaged and new reconstruction and restoration works were carried out on the destroyed parts on Via Manzini and Via Boschetti.
Starting from the 50’s, the significant evolution of filing systems, of technology and of safety standards pushed towards an updating of the building facilities that, due the specific Archives’ functions, could not be postponed.
The final renovation project took into consideration the whole history of the Palace, and, at the same time, included its intended use on the basis of the most modern criteria for the fruition and valorization of its document heritage.
